Podcast #6: This Is CAPTAIN AMERICA’S Podcast, Dammit!

Gadzooks! SPOILERS be poppin’ as Nick and Andrew dive into The First Avenger’s Second Fight (aka CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER). The two use their Marvel and comics know-how to examine the film and what it means for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.

Podcast #5: So Much For 2nd Chances

After loosing take 1, Nick and Andrew embark on an 2nd journey down Episode 5. Andrew steers the ship, getting lost in the stormy seas of FX, FXX, and FXM. Nick snipes invaders from the sky and questions the mechanics of Girl Meets World.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER – First Thoughts

Captain America is my favorite Avenger. He has the most interesting origin story… a man out of time constantly fighting Hydra, I enjoy watching him in combat with his shield on the ground as opposed to watching Iron Man or Thor fly about, and he’s just damn likeable as played by former Human Torch, Chris Evans.

In THE AVENGERS INITIATIVE: PHASE TWO (starting with IRON MAN 3 and ending after GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY with AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON in summer 2015), Marvel Studios has really found the heart and soul of each of their A-List Avengers in their individual pictures.

Iron Man 3 CreditsIRON MAN 3 wrapped up that franchise with an explosive (pun very much intended) finale fit for the boisterous Tony Stark. Even the credits exploded with a 3D 1970s style befit the franchise with a great, punchy score by Brian Tyler.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD sent us on LORD OF THE RINGS style epic fights amongst sword carrying soldiers in outer space, with lots of myth and everyone’s favorite Marvel villain, Loki. Brian Tyler again did the score, this time befitting the magnitude and epicness of the God of Thunder alongside great comic-esque paintings of the characters.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER also brings Captain America further into his own subuniverse within the official Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Now that the origin films are gone and there is little to set up for the AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, each hero is free to play in his own universe, with less (even after credits) sequences that set up AVENGERS 2. Rather, these days the post-credit sequences set up the next film within the THOR or CAPTAIN AMERICA franchises… not that WINTER SOLDIER doesn’t tease AGE OF ULTRON characters…

The Falcon Winter SoldierAs each sub-franchise takes on more of a unique feel, all under the Marvel Studios banner of combining light heartiness and jokes to the films to avoid Marvel becoming DC’s DARK KNIGHT or MAN OF STEEL franchises, the good Captain moves out of WWII and into a modern day espionage thriller… with just a few super soldiers, crazy living computers, and a winged soldier.

If Iron Man is the most classic superhero formula, and Thor is more a space saga (as I assume GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will be… only more lighthearted and joke filled than any other MCU film yet), then Captain America is the aforementioned thriller. Podcast #4: Nick Makes A Grave Mistake

Nick and Andrew discuss AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON’s first look at Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Ultron. Nick gets a little politically incorrect, while the pair learns they don’t know the difference between Tom Selleck and Burt Reynolds.

AVENGERS 2’s New Avengers Revealed: Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver

We now have set pics of Marvel Studios’ latest addition to their AVENGERS super franchise.

Meet Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch!

The children of Magneto…. who is owned by Fox… so we’ll get a changed origin? The are mutants after all, something we have yet to see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Check out Quicksilver here.Avengers 2's QuicksilverLet’s just say… I’m not impressed. In fact, the combo of his face and the trademark silver hair look silly.

But if you are to hit the jump, I have pictures of Scarlett Witch for you!

Podcast #3 – Kevin James: Great Actor or Greatest Actor?

Nick and Andrew compare the careers of Kevin James, Ryan Gosling, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Nick can’t help but reference KEY AND PEELE, Pete Holmes, SHERLOCK, and ATTACK ON TITAN… again. Geekiness ensues.

Podcast #2 – IN THE WAKE

Nick and Andrew discuss Tom Selleck’s moustache, the new Batman/Superman movie with Batfleck, SHERLOCK Series 3, and the incredible graphic novel THE WAKE. Among other geeky references and knowledge.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Poster: ‘You’re Welcome’

Yesterday I shared  the fantastic/incredible/amazing/invincible (will any comics geeks notice that Marvel reference?)Marvel Studios’  first GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY trailer.

Today, we have a poster.

Chris Pratt Leads the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY in this Fantastic Trailer!

I’ve been excited for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.

Marvel’s riskiest movie since THOR… looks absolurlty perfect with the levity the source material needs.

Never heard of Star Lord (Chris Pratt)? Or Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper)? Or Groot, the tree (Vin Diesel).

Meet them all now, courtesty of John C. Reilly’s Nova Corps commander (google Nova Corps; it’s like the Green Lanterns of the Marvel Universe).

Check out the awesome trailer after the jump!

CAPT.(AIN AMERICA) is back! Trailer #2 for WINTER SOLDIER.

Captain America: Winter Soldier Final PosterCAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER keeps looking better and better.

We’ve watched 2 hulks smash on each other, men in iron suits fighting other robot men… or Extremis fire men. 2 super strong forces set on destroying and saving; whether it’s sticking to walls, fight with the power of sand, or shooting lasers out your eyes… we’ve seen all sorts of superhero rumbles.

But this is different. Like the first film in the franchise, CAPTAIN AMERICA is different. The first was a war movie, the 2nd is being described as a ‘thriller.’

It all looks good to me!

Watch the full 2 and a half minute trailer after the jump. Continue reading “CAPT.(AIN AMERICA) is back! Trailer #2 for WINTER SOLDIER.”

2014 Movies to Geek Over

Now that 2013 is behind us, with Khan, Iron Man, and the Long Ranger down for the count, it is time to look forward to the movies to come in 2014!

First, an incredibly spooky trailer for the licensed version of PACIFIC RIM… GODZILLA! (From the very same Legendary Pictures as PACIFIC RIM… and HANGOVER… and DARK KNIGHT).

Is this the Godzilla I deserved but did not get in 1998? It sure looks creepy and realistic as hell. How do we defeat a Kaiju without Jagers? Continue reading “2014 Movies to Geek Over”

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Trailer! Helicarrier Down!

Before I say anything else, I must put forth this fact! The Russo brothers (Anthony and Joe) who I most love for directing countless episodes of my FAVORITE PIECE OF MEDIA EVER, ARRESTED fucking DEVELOPMENT have directed this film! (I also love the pair for directing some great eps of COMMUNITY.) Now…

Captain America: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Good Capt. in his new threads with Nick Fury.

Seems like it could have been an alternate title for the film, considering the trailer has very little of the Winter Soldier in it.

I’m just pleased as punch that we have a trailer for my favorite Avenger, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans)… aka Captain America’s second lone outing. And it is fucking sweet! Less superhero antics, more thriller/spy type action… with 2 superbeings and an agent with custom made wings…

Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce
Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce

As stated previously, Captain America’s not that alone with Agent Romanov (Scarlett Johansson), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce, all along for the ride. A big S.H.I.E.L.D. fiesta.

The Captain's New Clothes
The Captain’s New Clothes

IMDB also lists Emily VanCamp as Peggy Carter descendent and longtime comic ally to Steve Rogers,  ‘Agent 13.’

Even Peggy (Hayley Atwell) and young Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) are listed, leading the the awesome conclusion there will be at least a few flashbacks to Captain America’s WWII days.

The world has changed, and Steve Rogers is still getting used to it (though he does have his updated suit of stars). Rather than punishing evil after it happens, S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury are all about preventing terrorism. Is Rogers too idealistic? Because Nick Fury says that S.H.I.E.L.D. sees the world as it is, not as they want it to be.

“This isn’t freedom, this is fear.” – Steve Rogers

AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. “Girl In The Flower Dress” – Flame On!

The Girl in the Flower Dress, herself.
The Girl in the Flower Dress, herself.

A Chinese man named Chan can create fire from nothing, in the palm of his hand.

(Like Doc Ock says in SPIDER-MAN 2, “The power of the sun, in the palm of my hand!”)

Chan is approached by a mysterious woman in a flower dress. She convinces him to take on a superhero-esque name and show off his powers. After all, as she says, no one knows the name Steve Rogers, but everyone recognizes Captain America.

So, Scorch is born. (The girl in the flower dress’s idea).

Apparently becoming a superhero or supervillain is an important lesson in branding.

Before Chan can use his powers to bed the seductive girl in the flower dress, he is captured by men in fireproof suits that answer to the mysterious woman. Continue reading “AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. “Girl In The Flower Dress” – Flame On!”

CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER – New Poster! (Teaser Poster #2)

The first CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER Teaser... which also hangs in my office! Splush!
The first CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER Teaser… which also hangs in my office! Splush!

It’s here!

It’s HERE!

IT

IS

HERE!

The new poster for CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER is here… and it is S.H.I.E.L.D. heavy.

The good Capt. is in a S.H.I.E.L.D. aircraft, overlooking the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier… and Washington D.C.

Early word on the movie is that it is more of a “thriller” than your typical superhero film, just as CAPTAIN AMERICA: FIRST AVENGER was more of a war movie.

Did I mention Captain America is my favorite Avenger? Well, he is. He most definitely is.

We’ll know even more when the first Teaser Trailer hits the web tomorrow (Thursday, October 24th).

Check out the full poster after the jump!

AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D “Eye Spy” – More Skeletons In Coulson’s Closet

Another week, another MARVELous (sorry for the pun…) episode of AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Former S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Mindy
Former S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Mindy

In ‘Eye Spy,’ Coulson and the gang track down one of his old proteges, Agent Mindy, long thought dead, more recently appearing as a turncoat with superpowers. Not only is she a skeleton from Coulson’s past, but she can see skeletons with her new gift of X-Ray vision.

Rather than going into detail surrounding the synopsis, in this ‘issue’ I simply want to cover the broad strokes/themes of the season and how they play out in this ‘Eye Spy.’

You are welcome to watch the episode for yourself, for free, on Hulu, if you have not seen it already.

WHO IS THE ENEMY?

Tough question, no answers. Last week, the culprit behind everything appeared to be Ian Quinn’s company and Dr. Franklin Hall (who we are still waiting to reappear as Graviton).

In the Pilot (first) episode, we had a shady organization attaching a Extremis style centipede on human subjects to create superhumans.

In the second episode, ‘0-8-4,’ it seemed the villain was simply Coulson’s old Peruvian contact whose government commissioned a weapon from Hydra decades ago.

AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. “The Asset” – Coulson Creates His Own Demons

Tony Stark isn’t the only one in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) who creates his own demons. In the third episode of AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Phil Coulson ends up accidentally creating his own super-villain.

But just like the narrative of IRON MAN 3, let’s track this from the beginning…

If the “Pilot” was  an NCIS knock-off and “0-8-4” was a mini-Marvel action movie, then “The Asset” is basically Marvel’s version of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE.

You gotta' drop that shit in the ocean, son!
You gotta’ drop that shit in the ocean, son!

Starting with the most impressive special effects I’ve seen on a network show (surely part of the budget is borrowed from the AVENGERS INITIATIVE: PHASE TWO films), this globe spanning episode involves infiltrating an incredibly secure compound and ends with a device that would make SPIDER-MAN 2’s Doc Ock jealous.

AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. “0-8-4” – Coulson’s Team Assembles!

The second episode of AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. is a real Marvel!

While S.H.I.E.L.D.’s pilot left the question, whether or not the show would be original or an NCIS -type-procedural with a coat of Stan Lee paint, the 2nd episode proves this show is the real deal; a deal even Samuel L. Jackson can’t refuse.

This episode, Marvel movie fans get the treat of transitioning from A.I.M.’s  Extremis in episode 1, a Hydra’s Tesseract weapon of mass destruction.

Responding to a ‘0-8-4,’ Agent Phil Coulson’s (Clark Gregg) elite unit of S.H.I.E.L.D operatives and Skye (Chloe Bennet), the former(?) member of ‘The Rising Tide,’ (and acting consultant, just like one Tony Stark), end up in Peru.  What is a 0-8-4, you may ask? (As Skye did…).

Well, let’s just say the last 0-8-4 Agent Phil Coulson responded to was an unmovable hammer in New Mexico…

The 0-8-4 is.... an old Hydra weapon!
The 0-8-4 is…. an old Hydra weapon!
